[T3] distributor problem?

hey all,
i just got a 67 fastback from a guy that just put in an engine that he saw
run when he bought it, but after installing it, couldn't get it going.

after i got the fasty home, i went over all the timing and double checked
everything to make sure it was all lined up, i got to start, but it
doesn't want to run.

if...i pump the gas a few times it fires right up but promptly dies,
apparently as soon as all the gas is burned.(?)

if ... i then feather the gas pedal after it fires up, i can get it to
idle once i find the right rpm to feather at, up to that point it does
allot of popping and sneezing.

if...i try to speed it up it misfires violently and of course if i let it
go it dies.

when iwas checking all the timing, i noticed that the vac on the dist. is
corked off, and when i tried to loosen the set screw for the points, the
advance plate moved rather easily. so my assumption and the next thing i
am going to try is a new distributor. am i on the right trail? is it
better to fix the vac. adv. dist. or buy an 009?

an ideas or similar experiences would help tremendously.
