It's all controlled by the ECU. For a properly-matched system (there were changes over the years, so components must be compatible), you just need to be sure your sensors are properly connected and the voltage is up where it should be. The head temp and air temp sensors are fairly robust and usually don't fail. Common culprits for rich FI is a pressure sensor hose that isn't sealed well on both ends and low system voltage caused by a dying voltage regulator.
