I have noticed that mine waits a bit (but not a full second) before going
into reverse from park.

However, going into drive ("3") from reverse is very smooth and quick. The
gear change while the car is driving is _much_ smoother than I expected it
to be. The only way you know it has changed gear is from the sound of the
engine. I expected it to bump and clunk while changing gear, both because of
its age, and because most modern cars I have driven do so . . .
