You really can't tell. DOT 3 and 4 CAN mix, but it is far from ideal. It is DOT 5 that MUST NEVER mix with squat. I would recommend flushing and refilling with your desired, brandy new, nice and clear fluid. If you are seeing any brown now, just flush it out and replace it all. Please do NOT use DOT 5, even after flushing. A few people will say how they managed to upgrade, but without all new brake parts, and specifically those designed to handle it, I would not recommend this..
