He also ran a stock exhaust, which seemed insane to me for a 2L. So I guess you could do it, although I wouldn't know the particulars. My single carb. 1500 drives pretty nice, I wouldn't say it's slow at all. The 1600 in my '67 definately accelerates faster but it was built a little more recently.
