Re: [T3] 6vlt VS. 12vlt

>other than the obvious difference btwn 6 and 12 vlt,
what are the pros/cons for 6vlt

Erik, on the 6v vs. 12v argument. I've been on this road myself.
Personally, I have lived with my '66 (still having her electronics pumping
out 6v) for a year now and I can't really complain. She does absolutely
everything she's supposed to do. I have even managed to add my 12v CD
Player to her with a small transformer (both fit in the glove compartment).
I have only 3 wishes that really aren't hurting things being the way they
are that even remotely make me want to go through the hassle (and money) of
changing stuff around.

1) I'd like fog/driving lights
2) It'd be nice to have a bright set of H4's
3) I don't have a power source for recharging my cell phone

Items 1 & 2 are probably more silly desires than anything else as even
living out close to the boonies I have not ever found myself really NEEDING
more light than I have w/ my high-beams

Item 3 I have gotten around by always carrying with me a little battery
operated Air-Compressor that has an emergency light and a 12v cigarette
lighter outlet on it.

Now what you would have to do... You really wouldn't NEED to change out the
starter or flywheel as they will just spin a little faster w/ 12v but would
work fine for many years w/o complaint. You would need to switch out every
light bulb (instruments, blinkers, domes, headlights, etc) maybe something
with the clock (if it even works ;) and a voltage drop on the wipers. I
don't know about the dizzy, I am pretty sure you would have to do the coil.
And of course you would have to do 1 of 3 things about the generator. 1)
Get a rewound 6v unit to 12v (people have said to me that may not be a great
idea, but I saw one on Samba a few days ago). 2) get a 356 Porsche 12v unit
that is a perfect match, but AIN'T CHEAP. or 3) get either a 12v Generator
or follow Toby's Writeup and install a forklift 12v alternator, but both of
those require you to change out your fanshroud.

As I said, I've been contemplating this one for a while myself, I keep going
back to the theory of the old girl's pretty happy this way and I'm not quite
ready to go messing around with something that's worked (for 37 years).
