If you don't plan to paint the car for a while then I would (without question) use an epoxy primer. One it seals against the elements, and two it can spray over bare metal, oem paint, body work etc... Then you can actually use glazing putty to fill in your body work right over the epoxy primer. You can get cheap epoxy primer from your local auto body supply, try PPG OMNI brand, it is about $60 a agallon. If you use rattle can primer, you are basically going to ruin your car by letting it rust. If you are going to go as far as buy a gallon of primer, might as well spend $15 on a quart of PPG OMNI single stage acrylic enamel and another $15 on the reducer and spray 2-3 coats of paint.. This would be the equiv of a maaco paint job, but will cost you less, might not last 5-10 years, but it will by FAR outlast primer. Don't kill your VW!!
