The position of the oil cooler is certainly different, but there is still room under 
it for air to reach the left rear cylinder.

I really don't think this holds up well. While the supply of air from the two 
types comes from different directions, they both end up with air blowing from 
top to bottom across both cylinders.

On a type 3 the cooling air for the front cylinder passes above the rear 
cylinder, not thru it. It has not been prewarmed when it gets there.
