<x-charset iso-8859-1>Hello Jim, Today I dismantled the entire steering assembly, and what you say appears to be correct. The PO had obviously been there also and just detectable was where the wire had been cut, very neatly done but such a pain to work out. For your future reference, on this model, if not others - the steering column shaft is live, not the outer as is on some (most?) bugs. The shaft is made live via. the brown return wire attached to a commutator on the ball race which is insulated from the outer tube by a nylon ring- as you pointed out. It's all clear now, thanks very much for your input. It would have been a lot simpler if the PO had not been so neat about it, which is certainly not reflected in the rest of the wiring disaster.
