By "recommended tire pressure" I believe John is referring to the labeling on
the side of the tire that in my experience is more likely to read, "maximum
inflation pressure." VW's "recommended tire pressure" for type 3s was 17-18
psi, to which I add a couple of psi to add longevity to the tires.

That maximum is just that, the maximum which the tire will withstand. It is in
no way a recommendation. The recommendation comes from VW and is
MUCH lower.

It is a common misconception that there is a single "correct" inflation
pressure for a tire. In reality, the tire has a maximum, but the tire and the
application determine the correct inflation pressure.

For notches/fastbacks/T34s use 19/27 psi. (front/rear.) For squares use
20/30 unloaded and 20/36 fully loaded.

EVERYTHING depends on the weight supported by that one tire.

Note: These pressures are just for stock 165-15 tires. If you use a different
size the correct pressure will be different (wider tires need LESS pressure.)
It's all about the tire footprint and the weight per square inch of footprint
(pressure.)
