Alright....it is altogether too quiet on the List this weekend. I tore down the engine from my 71 Fasty recently and have measured the journals and have a question. The crank is clearly uncut, but how do I decide if it needs to be cut or not? Here is my theory. Let me know if my thinking is correct. Minimum Journal Diameter (MJD) = Largest New Diameter - [(Radial Play Wear Limit - Upper Limit on New Radial Play) x 2] Using this formula and the specs in my Bentley, I calculated the following Mimimum Journal Diameters. My actual average measurements are also listed. Bearing # MJD Measured (mm) (mm) Main #1 54.83 54.88 Main #2 54.83 54.86 Main #3 54.83 54.88 Main #4 39.82 39.87 Rod #1 55.84 54.87 Rod #2 55.84 54.87 Rod #3 55.84 54.88 Rod #4 55.84 54.88 Cam #1 24.86 24.90 Cam #2 24.86 24.90 Cam #3 24.86 24.90 Given these numbers, should I have the crank reground .25mm (.010 in) under? BTW, I still need to check the case. Later, John Jaranson '71 FI AT Fasty (Jane) '66 Square (???)
