Not to belabor the obvious, but have you verified each of the following:

ALL cooling tin is in place (see the Bentley manual for pictures.)

Air intake bellows is intact and connected.

Thermostat is intact, working, and the flaps open and close.

Spark plug air seals are all there and intact.

I don't see a problem with 10W- or 20W-40 oil, but I think 10W- or 20W-50 is 
likely to be overkill and lead to more damage from the problems you suggest.

Get in there with a light and see if you can verify that all 6 main bearing stud 
nuts are present and tight.

Then ask yourself if there's any chance that you're running too lean for some 
reason.
