As in Australia and South Africa, I suspect that the name "Variant"
was not used for the Type36 Squareback because it was too close
to the similar sounding name "Valiant" used for the car manufactured
by Chrysler Corporation in USA, South Africa and Australia.

I believe that for the same reason the current VW Passat "Variant" is
not sold as such in Australia because there are still thousands of
old Chrysler Valiants still on our roads. Here it is sold as the VW
Passat "Wagon".
