[T3] 74 super B. shift rod

Hey, I just bought a 74 super beetle, and I'm trying to get the shift rod 
out to put in a new bushing on the tunnel bracket.... This car doesn't have 
the little access panel under the front bumper that my squareback has 
through which to pull the shift rod. How do I get the thing out? I could use 
some pointers on getting the clip around the bushing once every thing's in 
place too. Thanks a lot!
