I have now replaced both the upper and lower rubber parts of the overflow hose. Yesterday I found my tank was empty. I suspect that the petrol evaporated through the upper rubber pipe. There was not much to start with, possibly 1 or 2 litres. The weather is getting hottish now, about 25 degrees, and I think that is a factor in the smell getting stronger now. When I replaced the upper rubber hose, I found that the old one was quite perished. The rubber was hard and stiff, and I could turn the hose around on the metal pipe easily. The hose I have replaced it with is not fuel hose, so I will have to replace it again probably at some point. The guy in the garage where I bought it said it should be OK, and I suppose it will be in the short run. I couldn't find fuel hose of the right diameter. I can't rule out a leak, but I doubt it for now because there is no smell under the car, only in the front compartment, and the entire underside of the tank seems to be bone dry. I will keep an eye on it of course. I checked it now and there is not much smell, and I haven't lost any fuel since yesterday. Does it sound reasonable to you that that you could lose, say, a liter of petrol in on a hot day due to evaporation? Also, I am not sure as to the accuracy of the fuel gauge when there is very little petrol in the tank. At the moment, it jumps up just past the "R" when I turn the ignition on. I think there's about 3 liters in there. If the petrol went down below a certain level, would it suddenly show nothing at all?
