If you hadn't tied the flaps open the engine would probably not have lasted a
year. With the flaps tied open in southern CA I would think that it would last
5 years. With the proper thermostat, etc, it should last 10-15 years.

The engine is designed to run a temp such that the exhaust air is at 165F.
This means that there will be internal engine parts that want to be much
hotter than this. This is pretty hot, so even in warm climates the warmup
period will be longer. Since most wear occurs during warmup, prolonged
warmup means more wear.

If you have FI, then the cyl head temp sensor will sense that the head is cool
and it will richen the mixture. This leads to even more wear.
