<x-charset iso-8859-1>I had all kinds of leaking problems and corrected them in the car ,really uncomfy under there. Big big puddles. This is the way I did it but could have been better if the tranny were out, I pulled it out later when my engine was out to swap out the differential, previous 6 owners never changed or touched the diff so it was kind of sloppy, bearings. From 1969 , several engines later, and odometer turning severel times same tranny and diff, I had a box of recieps from previous owners. - clean tranny, rags , lots of rags, dipped in gasoline, I hear everyone going doh ! Oh no ! - After cleaning got way in there with a flashlight days later, found leaks from several locations : - Pan gasket , much oil. -large o ring gasket between the diff and tranny, leaking - o ring on the tranny shfter lever - o ring on connector kick down switch - o ring on the dipstick tube - no oil from rear oil seal dripping (torque converter seal) - all 4 nuts were loose between the the tanny and the diff - I replaced the three small o rings and globbed silicon on the dipstick tube and switch connector. - pan gasket replaced after pan was removed and had bolt holes straightened to prevent leaks. - Large o ring could not be replaced but gobs of silicon was applied around the seam after the 4 nuts were tightened and locked were silicon. No more oil leak, very tight and dry for 4 months. *****Best to do the sealing properly on the bench and get the proper seals, I called *****a parts dist at 1800-367-8019 and told them I need a tranny kit for a VW 003 . *****They have them and you can get it in the mail. The autotranny will almost last a lifetime if fluid is pan plug drained every 20,000 to 30,000 miles with semi synthetic tranny fluid. Best if you place a magnet in the pan to pickup any steel shavings. The way to longetivity is replace old fluid (which may have brokened down by heat), prevent contamination and make sure fluid level is not low. (I still have the working 1957 autotranny in my 1951 Dodge, worked very hard for a long time.
