[T3] Neutral safety switch

The mechanism that prevents starting the engine in anything but neutral.
What is it for? Although I can understand the need to prevent starting the
engine in gear, why prevent starting in park?

My switch as of now is completely disconnected, so in theory I can start in
any gear. So I particularly need to know if it does any harm if I forget and
start the engine in park?
