It was made for an upright engine. There are a number of non-stock setups that WILL work under the engine lid, though, like a pair of baby Dells, as long as you can find/make manifolds for them. If you're looking for more/better quality power, I would stay away from single carbs in a Type3. Dual Solex 32PDSIT's perform wonderfully and are a great way to go while keeping it stock, and they're not too hard to maintain or find parts for.
