I've just started driving my 63 Notch on a regular basis and am unable to get rid of some major hesitation. When I first touch the throttle it's smooth but from there if I stomp it will buck and snort like crazy. If I baby the revs up until maybe 3500 it starts to pick up and if I step on it at that point it accelerates pretty well. The motor is a questionable rebuild with a short stud kit on only one head(!), original distributor and single carb. I just pulled the tank and washed it clean and changed the fuel filters and lines. The fuel pump is the plastic covered T3 sort. I swapped in another used T3 pump and there was no change. I've cleaned the carb thoroughly, changed the accelerator pump diaphragm and all the gaskets. This definitely helped but the hesitation remains. Today I replaced the original distributor with a single carb '65 unit and the hesitation remains. The valves are properly set (.008' on one side and .006' on the other!) I've checked them a few times since I first started driving two weeks ago. Today I noticed that when I rev the engine and release the throttle I am getting a puff of greyish smoke. I have another presumably sound motor that hasn't been rebuilt that I can swap in but if I can drive this thing reliably I will leave well enough alone. Does anyone have any ideas or advice?
