Loose manifolds would be expected to cause the carbs to run lean, 
but perhaps someone overcompensated with giant jets and now it's 
dumping in extra gas which ends up in with the oil.

You're in the best position to judge the oil pump problem. You DO 
have the right oil pump, don't you? (You checked the matchup of 
the inlet and outlet as you were putting it together, right?)
