Since they were made in Belgium, could they have been sold in UK? Only a
quick ferry 'cross the channel.

Starting in '99, Golfs for the UK market (and probably others RHD markets
as well) are made (or maybe CKD assembled) in South Africa, as this frees
up valuable production room for LHD models in Germany and Belgium. It also
brings valuable Rands into South Africa. Also most new Golfs sold in the
US are made in Brazil, and New Beetles sold in Europe are made in Mexico.
Cheap labour overseas is helpful in keeping the prices down I guess.
