I don't think copyrights expire, but there may be something you 
have to do periodically to maintain them, like file for a renewall 
every 17 years. A company that just slowly went under and 
disappeared may well have let their rights lapse.

Perhaps a search of the US Patent Office web site would help. 
They administer copyrights in the US.
