Re: [T3] Earliest RHD Type 3?

Tooling for the Type 3 didn't arrive for Type 3 manufacture at the Melbourne
VW factory until late in 1962. It wasn't until early 1963 that Type 3
notchbacks and squarebacks went on sale in Australia. By this time
German-made Type 3s had been on sale in other drive on the left countries for
some time.

The cover story for the first edition of "Safer Motoring" (Nov 1961) features
the then new "1500" and there is a test of one in London but it is left hand
drive. Some time during 1962 Type 3s became available with right hand drive
in Britain. A check through 1962 editons of "Safer Motorings" might reveal
this - I only have the Nov 1961 issue and my collection begins in 1969.

27 September 1963 was the date that the Type 3 "1500 Sedan" was introduced to
the South African market (November for the Variant) and they were
CKD-assembled at the Uitenhage VW factory.

And, incidentally, I have a photo of early 1962 notchbacks for Sweden being
off-loaded from a truck in Sweden and they are all left hand drive even though
I think Sweden drove on the left until September 1967.

I am not certain but I believe that assembly of Type 3s at Dublin in Ireland
didn't start until 1969 models.

So, I believe the first RHD Type 3s must have come off the production line at
Wolfsburg sometime early in 1962. I, too, would be interested to know when
the first RHD Type 3 was born.
