The mixture screw on the 32PDSIT allows more fuel in as it is undone, rather than more air. If the plugs that side were sooty, it may be you have so much fuel coming in due to a leaking needle-valve eg (and hence a too-full or overflowing float chamber) that the small changes on the mixture screw don't have much effect. Are the chokes opening correctly? It doesn't sound much like an air leak if the plugs are very sooty. (Check the ignition is OK to that head). Dave.
