JASON,
On your EFI,
You had the sensor adjusted to pass smog but an adjustment
on the fuel pressure did not work to pass it , hmmm, interesting.
So your car now passes smog and has become gutless, welcome
to the world of emmisions, that is why older emmision cars from the 70's
and 80's suck in power and they are in the junkyard for the most part
because of smog pumps, egr valves, oxigen sensors sealed
mixture controls, all designed to make the car work lean at all speeds,
sometime at less than a 13 to one fuel ratio. The newer cars with the
multidimentional engine maps work for emissions and performance.
I bought a brand new sealed sensor from Bosch and it did run way
too lean and caused my engine to run around 90 degrees hotter,
from 260 degrees to 350 on a cold day at 75 mph on flat terrain.
On hot days it would hit 440 degrees from 350 for the same speed.
This was not good, I did not wish to perform anymore head
cracking or melting anylonger.
Fuel formulations and elevation
is the varible during a factory adjustment. In some countries,
bad gas will make an engine run so bad that the fuel mixture
must be adjusted to adapt to the fuel. I lived deep in Mexico
and tourists always noticed their cars not running as well
so mixure adjustments were done manually to compensate.
On newer cars those oxygen sensors perform that job when
they are working correctly.
I am not a smog monger but beleive cars pollute more if you
have to press on the gas more to make it move normal when too lean.
There are mods you can perform on it like that dash mounted pot
to fake the brain from the head temp sensor, telling the brain that
the head is colder than it is thus enrichening the mixture. You can also
increase the fuel pressure sightly, make sure you have good fuel
lines, I blew my old ones up during tuning and increasing pressure,
old lines, I guess they were border line, commonly they are designed
to take the common 55 lbs kind of lose their strength cause of
oils, heat, time etc.... I use some industrial external and internal
braided lines that look like the original, easy to get for me.
You can adjust your present sensor or an old good one but be
gentle and patient; make sure to keep track in what position it
at was before. Adjust it richer, then drive it to your favorite hill
take note of the performance if not satisfied then perform
the adjustment until it is just right, that is how I did it, finally
mark it or take note on how much you turned it.
On my unit it is like adjusting the fuel mixture on a carb :
counterclockwise, richer, max two turns until engine missing bad
clockwise is leaner, max two turns until engine missing bad. I think
the adjustment is the same for all, but I may be wrong.
You can also vary the fuel pressure, this would be the easiest.
A good running engine should not be too lean, have some guts
and run cooler to protect the heads etc... I see nothing wrong
running it richer for good all around daily driver.

May I foreward this to the list ?

Yes, Finally. but now i think it is maybe running too lean for day to day
driving?? I dont know how hot it gets, i have no temp gauge. but it is kinda
gutless on hills now. should i just run my other pressure regulator during
the year? i dont know, it runs kinda rich. or should i just richen up this
one a little with the big brass screw? or keep it the way it is and modify
the other one just a little leaner. I am going to pick up another pressure
sensor from a utah car and see if it makes any difference. i know it
probably wont but spare parts are spare parts i guess. i just want to make
it a little gutzier on big hills. before i could go up the hill by my house
at about 50 mph. now its like 40-45 and i have to drop into 3rd. extremely
lame and people pass me dangit. what do ya think i should do?
Cheers man!
Jason

Did you ever get your car successfully smogged ?
