The original VW recommendation had been .004/.004, but, according to the story that I heard, there were too many warrantee claims for burned exhaust valves, so they changed the recommendation to .006/.006. Since this was really only done for the sake of the exhaust valves, I recommend .004/.006 just because this gives you the best of both worlds: good exhaust valve cooling and the best intake breathing. You can "get away" with this simply because the intake valves never did have a problem with the .004 setting in the early years when it was the recommendation. Russ's story puts a different tilt on this, but I've never had a problem starting in cold weather with .004/.006, at least not a problem that I couldn't blame on something else. OTOH, my cars have never been asked to start at -40F. 8-0! - Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------- Unsubscribe? mailto:type3-request@vwtype3.org, Subject: unsubscribe
