Just a short update for anyone interested. I finally finished my Type 3 powered Sandrail. Ran into a few snags along the way in using the Type 3 configuration: First off was the exhaust. As you know, the Type 3 cooling shroud makes it tough, if not impossible to use the typical off-road exhaust. After searching for something to use, I found a "Dual Outlet" exhaust by Bugpack that specifically stated that it would work on a Type 3 engine. After ordering it and trying to fit it on the engine, I found out that it won't fit, at least with dual Dellortos. It may work with the stock carbs, but the exhaust would have to run in place of the intake manifolds with Dells. After sending the exhaust back, I ended up having a muffler shop build headers from scratch utilizing two Turbo mufflers that are mounted front to back, at 90 degrees next to each carb. Works excellent. Plenty of clearance underneath. That was the biggest expense. I haven't done much off roading. One thing I noticed was that *everything* needs to be tightend down well. Either by using nyloc nuts or loctite. I had some bolts come loose on the turn brakes. Pretty easy repair. The turn brakes were unbelievable. And I have rear drums only. I could literally turn on a dime! These are an absolute must in the sand. Motor ran great, except for the carburetors. Seems that one needs some work. I may rebuild them both. They are about 10 years old... sat for some time with gas inside. Funny thing about the Type 3 motor. People don't quite know what it is. I had some guys ask what Porsche it was from. Another guy simply said, "What the hell is that?". It was pretty cool not having the typical Type 1 motor. The only real problem that I haven't quite resolved is the dip stick and tube from a Type 3. I ended up taking the upper part off including the rubber coupler (what is that thing called?) and "sealing" off the tube with a plug similar to one used on a boat. Works well, but I can't check the oil. I need to resolve this. Definately need 4.86 r&p. 4.12(11?)'s just don't cut it on the dunes.
