I have seen some fantastic customized Type III cars. I am amazed at the
creativity these folks express. However, I am always more impressed by a
clean car in original condition or newly restored to stock. Restoring a
tired car to stock condition is a much more difficult goal. Adding
aftermarket wheels and the like can be cool. But I would never alter a Type
III in a "non-reversible" manner. If the car is too far gone, go custom. If
it has a fighting chance of rising to "stock glory", make it so.

Just my opinion.
