The safety rim has a hump just inside the bead that the bead has 
to climb over to get into place. This makes it harder for the bead to 
be pushed sideways toward the center of the rim in hard cornering.

All VWs got these rims around 66 sometime. I suspect that they 
were something new and that all the auto makers introduced them 
about the same time.
