    I hate to say this, but the fuel senders are delicate creatures.
Both Jim and I have worked on mine and it still jerks around when
moving.  Make sure the dash gauge is grounded and the sender
connection is sound.  The worst part is that it is really inaccurate
in the low range, and the first time I ran out of gas.  I had no idea,
and was checking for ignition etc.  I had to open the gas cap to
believe it.  Luckily it was a downhill roll to the station, it still
makes me chuckle...
    Your '66 should have "safety" rims.  I believe the "J" in 15 x
41/2J stands for safety.  Take a look at the rims and you will also
see the date stamp, inside a tiny 1/4 inch circle.
