Check out www.shoptalkforums.com (Type 4rum is what you want); http://tunacan.net/t4/tech/type3.shtml ; www.aircooledtechnology.com (Jake is an excellent engine builder for T1, T4, and conversion engines, he'll help you with anything and everything, even a year afterwards. Tell him I sent you.) This should get you started in the right direction. I did contribute to some of the "articles", so you may see my name occasionally.... My opinion about engine size: Stock type driving habits, easier conversion, excellent mpg, 100k miles plus-- 2056cc (100-130hp) Something more wild, PITA exhaust problems, tranny upgrade will soon be required, consider better tires and better brakes, 20mpg+ (maybe 30mpg) depending on tranny, 100k miles plus-- 2270cc(130-160hp) Crazy and no heater boxes, upgrade tranny a must and new, bigger tires, better brakes 20-60kmiles (unless you use the new 102mm cylinders Shad Laws is making) -- >2270cc (to 300hp) My opinion about Rods: In bigger engines -- use Type I rods (aftermarket). They are longer and will work better in the engine (usually). Don't use the stock Type 4 rods -- they are a bit on the short and heavy side. Check with your builder, of course. Ignition: Do not use a 009. Use a vacuum advance dist like the stock 205x series distributor from T4s. Get a compufire, a new coil, and CDI. Makes life SOOOOO much better. I've gained power and mpg for meager investments (~<$200). Heads: 1.8L or Porsche 2.0L. No 1.7, 2.0 Bus, or 2.0 Square ports. Remmelle heads if you have the $$$. This will solve the exhaust problems since it uses stock T1 exhaust layout. Use only on big monster engines for whooping Corvette @$$. Crank: If building up: Stock 71mm or CW stroker. Don't use 66mm unless you want to stay small (1.7/1.8L) or have a very special application (like an airplane or something). Exhaust: Make sure it FLOWS! I have a 2 1/2" exhaust and that does it. I started with something else intended for a Bus 2.0L and it was way too restrictive. Installation Mounts: You will need to mimic the stock T4 mounting methods. Specifically, 1) a center mount where the engine/transmission mate, OR use a Swing axle setup, 2)stock Bus/914/412/411 cross bar with neat little fabbed brackets to the bumper mount location. That's my 0.02. Have fun with the conversion. And read the old posts in the Type 4rum. Steve __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make a great connection at Yahoo!
