I'll post this to the list, because I think it may be of general interest. Mike is just asking what I found when I tore down the old engine that he traded in to me last summer. I don't have the case apart yet, but so far I found at least 4 interesting things: 1) The lower rear head stud on the RHS (#2 cyl) was pulled out about 1/4", so this was not holding at all. 2) The first compression ring on the #1 cyl was broken in half and appeared to have been that way since installation. 3) There were 3 different kinds of pistons in the engine, 2 brands. 4) I THINK at least one of the pistons was installed upside down. There were a number of loose nuts and bolts, as well as some of the studs in the oil sump which were coming loose. You probably knew about those, but I can fix them, no problem. The rod bearings look fine. That's all I have so far. - Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------- Search old messages on the Web!
