<x-charset iso-8859-1>I was puzzled too by this statement. I have to accept that under similar operating conditions the newer VWs are better on fuel consumption, and certainly less polluting if the whole range of exhaust gases are considered. They are generally heavier too, for the same class of car, so if you went for a similar weight to the Type 3 the gain would be even more. If you take into account the extra materials used for the same class of car, manufacturing pollution might be greater, but since those processes have been cleaned up too, I think it unlikely. Maybe like Toby I've missed something fundamental in Jim's comment, and my twin carb Variant does more mpg than the EFI Fastback, so I don't necessarily agree with Toby either!
