RE:[T3] New car, long break-in drive home (was type3-d Digest V01 #312)

Where in southern Oregon? Ashland, Medford, Grants Pass, ???

Why did they sell the car w/such low mileage? If you can trailer the car
home that would be much better. Jim, FYI, from Seattle to southern Oregon
is all I-5 (interstate five). With 300 or so miles on the engine it still
isn't broken in unless they broke it in on a dyno (my first 2.0L was done
that way). Don't mention this unless they specifically tell you because not
many builders I know of actually do this (it takes time and isn't very
exciting). Chances are it will need breaking in :(

There are a couple 'hills' (more like small mountains for you flat-landers
:) that will require you to be in 2nd and 3rd on your way out of s. Oregon.
Steady cruising is not a good idea at all but that's what you'll be driving
on for 4/5 of the drive home...hopefully you'll hit that wonderful Seattle
traffic that'll allow you to remain in 1st/2nd and properly vary the engine
rpm and engine loads. I wouldn't recommend the drive home as a break-in
drive because it's completely the wrong environment but if you truly have no
choice just make sure to keep varying the rpm, hit the rest stops and let
the engine cool down (open the engine lid).

Okay, before you drive it home I'd recommend you have the valves adjusted
WHILE THE ENGINE IS COLD! It really needs to sit over-night then have the
valves adjusted. Then it can be started and driven. Don't even think about
it if the engine isn't DEAD COLD (we want to play it safe, right?). Change
the oil. You want fresh, clean oil. The engine can be any temp for this
operation, preferably a little warm. Don't over-fill it! And bring some
extra oil along for the trip, just in case.

If, on your way home, you want to take a break and perform an oil change
you're welcome to hit my garage. I can give it the once-over as well and
you can hear a built 2.0L with open exhaust (ceramic coated stinger, no
baffle!!) sing it's battle cry :D Email me at toby.erkson@intel.com during
the day (work addy, best way to reach me) or air_cooled_nut@pobox.com in the
evening (home addy, which I don't check very often) and we can set up
directions/phone numbers. I live in Beaverton, which is just south of
Portland and to the west of I-5 (between Hwy 26 & I-5).

Good luck and take it easy!
