Many UK owners who've not rushed out to get "unleaded" heads fitted are trusting the advice from VW that their engines are fine on unleaded. The continental Europeans have used this for years. It doesn't seem to be causing any problems. The only circumstances that raise any concern is if you've done a valve job with inferior quality valves. These may wear quicker in the guides, but the seats are no problem as they are already hardened. As far as upper cylinder lubricant is concerned in an old Wolseley, my dad always put a shot of Redex per gallon back in the '50s in his Zephyr. I would expect the original valve seats in that to give trouble over a significant mileage, but you did all sorts of engine work every 20,000 miles back then. If there's a chance any will reach your VW exhaust valve guides, it might give a few more miles per engine in a VW, but I'm not convinced it will get there. BTW, US gallons are smaller than Imperial ones (about the only US thing smaller than the UK version!); it should read 11 US gallons. Dave.
