Well, that's why I keep getting confused. I have two opposite "readings". Why am I getting great mileage and carbon on the plug. The plugs are flat black powdery substance - not oily at all, so I don't believe that I have any oil leaking past the piston rings. -----Original Message----- From: Jim Adney [mailto:jadney@vwtype3.org] Rich = too much gas Lean = too little gas 35 mpg is a lot for these cars, so this sounds pretty lean to me. OTOH, plugs that are dark with carbon are usually a sign of too rich a mixture (the carbon comes from the gas.) Of course there are other things that can darken the plugs, like too much oil leaking past the rings. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Too much?
