We lost leaded fuel at the start of 2000 in the UK. Since then I have heard
nothing good about LRP. It seems to cause poor starting and running in a lot
of cars, and has a reputation for carboning (is that a word?) up the spark
plugs. Most people with old British cars that need the lead seem to be
happier with unleaded fuel and an additive. Castrol Valvemaster seems okay,
and is available in an octane-boosting version for high-compression cars.

We had a debate about this last year on the group, and the consensus seemed
to be that the VWs don't need the lead, at least for the valve seats. I
believe there is a question mark over the valve guides on older cars. I like
to use some additive if I'm going on a long motorway run, but that may just
be paranoia.

BTW Simon, I saw a K70 in the classifieds in the French mag Super VW for
FF10000 (£1000). I was a bit tempted, but not quite enough to jump on a
plane!
