I have always had success with this method, but I have always been very careful to avoid twisting stresses on the plate. I agree that it is fragile and I could easily imagine turning one into a pretzel. Maybe I've just been lucky; I haven't done that many of them. I know that the fixture existed, but I've never seen anything more than a picture of one. My biggest question on this subject is why did VW make a 3-point plate for the type 3s but use a 4-point plate for the auto stick shift?
