They were originally different, but they have the same external dimensions. So type 1 shocks will fit, but they have different damping factors. You should be able to bounce up and down on the rear of your car and see if the shocks are really bad, or if one has failed. In spite of what the ads say, I have found that shocks don't weaken with time, but they will eventually fail completely. So there is never any question about whether they really should be replaced. Another thing I have noticed is that the OE shocks were of astounding quality and have outlasted all the replacements which misled owners installed over the years. Your best bet is to find a good OE set. Fastback and squareback are different. VW even sold HD versions, although I've never seen one of them.
