You'll have to give us more info on this engine's carburation and 
distributor. The vacuum advance is not supposed to do anything at 
idle, so you have yours hooked up in a non-standard way, that is 
likely to not be working the way you expect it to. I'm guessing that 
it is hooked up to manifold vacuum and is fully advanced at idle; 
pulling the hose off removes the advance and it dies.
