The VR doesn't need to be grounded for the starter and the rest of 
the electrics to work; it DOES need to be grounded to make the 
charging work properly once the engine is running.

It you clearly have a bad connection somewhere and most of your 
description would point to a battery connection, either + or _, but in 
that case I wouldn't expect the clock and radio to work. Check your 
battery posts first. Then check the other ends of the wires. Make 
sure all the post connections are all the way down on the posts, 
but DON'T HAMMER them down.

Use a voltmeter to check for voltage between different points until 
you find the unintended voltage drop.
