Dave, really sorry to hear about your dropped valve, but I doubt if it had anything to do with missing a single check. More likely it was just its time. For the record, I find that I get many checks out of a valve cover gasket; I just check the gaskets with a fingernail to make sure they are still pliable and put them back in.
