Greg is right. Modern engines (unfortunately the FI T3 engine no longer qualifies...8^)) run high compressions ratios without knock due to the computer controlled ignition timing and advanced sensing technology. The 2.0L Zetec engine in the Ford Focus runs a 9.6:1 compression ratio on a recommended 87 octane gas. Remember that knock is worse under different engine loading conditions. Modern engine management systems can detect knock in the combustion chamber and compensate with delayed iginition timing, fuel injection timing, and/or valve timing. Even the FI T3 does not do this. BTW, I am still asking around about the "ringing" cast crank question.
