There has been a thread on the aircooled VW Newsgroup regarding cast cranks. John Connolly, a regular contributor whom I respect, maintains that these cranks don't ring, then just KLUNK. I have a hard time believing this to be true, but I've never handled a cast crank. Has anyone here had this opportunity and can they tell us the outcome? I believe John J. mentioned that cast cranks are common in the auto industry these days, but can you tell me if they will ring or not? For those who don't know about this: One way to check a part, like a crank, is to disassemble all the parts off it and tap it gently with a hammer. A good crank will ring like a bell while a cracked one goes THUNK. Apparently the sides of the crack rub against each other and dissapate the vibrational energy so that the ringing is quickly quenched. I've had a cracked crank that I discovered this way and the difference was VERY dramatic. - ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
