I think the thing that cinches this is the pitch. Measuring thread 
ODs is full of pitfalls because you never know how much the thread 
crests have been rounded off. Look up the "3-wire" thread 
measuring technique; I think it's covered in the handbook. I've never 
done it, but it looks like an accurate, but difficult, way to remove 
the uncertainty.

I agree that this inch thread in our cars is pretty hard to swallow. ;-)
