You all have it more or less correct. The 66 and 67s were wired the same, which was the same as the T1 and 2s, with that add on switch mounted under the left side, usually, of the T3 dash in a folded metal black wrinkle painted bracket (how many do you want?), just the coil voltages were different.. Those relays are the reason I went with slightly later parts on my '64 notch. And I now have a 3 hole dash with the switch nestled neatly between the windshield wiper switch and the head light switch. Even VWs addition of a dash mounted switch in '68 didn't look right to me. It looks like "just put a hole in the dash and don't match it to the opposite side switch mount" is the mentality that VW took. BTW, it is rather simple when changing from 6V to 12, or fixing a 66 or 67, to go ahead and use the '68 and later style of wiring and blinker relay( use a 6volt for the early stuff if you don't wanna upgrade to 12v.). Just use the emergency flasher switch from a 12 v T1, 2 or 3 and get yourself a common 3 prong blinker relay. I think it could be done in less than 3 hours. You won't have to try and find the obsolete, EXPENSIVE, 1 year only relays. I detailed this fairly well on my site.
