68 fastback, 36k original miles! broken clutch release lever return spring and broken clutch pedal arm. The clutch pedal arm was broken near the pivot point. I replaced the clutch pedal with one from a parts car, painted and rebuilt the pedal cluster. When I went to the back of the car I noticed the spring was broken. I wondered if the two things had any connection? I'm anxious to drive the car. s I read the response about being able to replace the spring without removing the seized lever. I tried to screw the old spring off. There just wasn't enough room for me to get both hands on it. I'm doing this all with the car on jackstands. I'm going to try the other suggestion: "If you can't get the spring in, you can remove the fixing bolt (10mm head) that holds the shaft bushing in place. This will allow the shaft to slide out slightly and let you get the spring in. Then you have to slide the shaft in and use a stiff wire or punch to MAKE SURE you have the hole in the bushing aligned with the threaded hole in the transmission case before you put the fixing bolt back in." My question about this method: How far does this shaft move and is it possible to move the shaft out too far and get in trouble. I really don't want to have to drop the engine. As soon as I get off work today I'm going to try this method and hopefully get the clutch cable back on the hook and pedals installed. I've replaced a clutch cable before and used a piece of twine to keep tension on the cable while installing the pedal. I had an idea last night. Wrap a breadbag tie(you know the paper covered wire) around the clutch cable end to hold it on to the pedal hook. That would keep the clutch cable from slipping of during install of pedal assy. What do you think? Any suggestions for the best way to conquer this problem?
