I keep a notebook in the glove box, and have recorded gas mileage
for 4 years. The last 4 tankfulls have seen a steady increase in
mileage, but I can't find a good reason for it. I've always noted
better mileage equals a better state of tune, but now I've noticed a
strange phenomena.
For three months my normal 80% city driving and 20% hwy commute
has been steady at 22-24 mpg. I then recorded a 25 mpg and then a 26
mpg, w/o a drastic change in city/hwy. I've never gotten over 26 mpg
before today. After a 160 mile hwy road trip to Mt. Hood and back I
got 28 mpg! The car still runs the same, and the only maintenance
done was topping off with a 1/2 quart of oil after the 25 mpg fillup.
What's going on? I'm worried I might run too lean and burn up a
head.
