My definition of overhaul is to disassemble as far as necessary to inspect everything to see what must be repaired, what must be replaced and what is okay. While it's easy to say just replace everything, this is a terribly expensive and wasteful way to live. In the end, I almost always end up rebuilding the calipers and replacing the pads. I often rebuild the rear cylinders and master cylinder. Rear shoes, rotors, lines, hoses, and front wheel bearings are occasionally replaced. Rear drums almost never get replaced. If you do this yourself it can take between a day and 3 weeks, and cost between $80 and $500. If you just replace everything with new parts it would cost more. When I do a car for myself, the cost in parts is seldom over $50, but it would take me a week or 2. - Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------- Too much?
